Passing around one package of proprietary software for co-workers to install or running off a few dozen copies of an expensive newsletter so everyone at the lab can read it as soon as it arrives in the mail or making a few dupes of a rented video to save training costs these bits of corner-cutting may seem inconsequential. But illegal copying is not inconsequential to owners of the copyrights. And there definitely are consequences for illegal copiers, as managers at one company learn when lawyers and computer auditors arrive in the lobby, accompanied by federal marshals with a warrant to search every computer in the company for unlicensed software.
